Last January, my day job took everyone to NYC for a book launch/holiday party. While we were there Jonathan Kane just happened to be playing a show in a “almost impossible” place to find called Project Issue Lodge in an industrial part of Brooklyn. (that is probably the wrong name, but i thought i’d attempt recollecting the name of the venue) Needless to say, watching JK and a band of 4 other amazing musicians playing the “February” record was beyond amazing. Imagine the third floor of an old warehouse building with whitewashed walls, faded hardwood floors, $5.00 cans of Tecate beer, Jon Mueller pumping his fists to a pulsating set of dirty blues that had been recreated for a modern avante garde New York hipster crowd. (In no way am I poking fun at said crowd of smiling music enthusiasts).
Well! That show has and will be forever burned into my memory as one of the most amazing musical experiences I will ever be part of. Not only was the music something to remember, but sharing that night with Dylan, Kat, Jon, Teresa, Kate, Meg, Ken, Elvis, and a beautiful group of foreign New Yorkers made that night something that will never be replicated.
That night has everything to do with why I wrote a song this week. It isn’t anywhere close to the quality of what we all saw that night, but it is my own tribute to a piece in time that none of us there that night are likely to forget.
